Mahir Elder, M.D., is an interventional cardiologist with the expertise patients need to manage even the most complex heart conditions.

Dr. Elder is the founder of Heart & Vascular Institute, which has locations in Dearborn, Detroit, Southfield, Wayne and Warren, Mich. He specializes in minimally-invasive procedures. His extensive medical background, including seven national board certifications, allows him to deliver exceptional care.

Dr. Elder aims to provide consistent, reliable care. He is known for responding to patients 24 hours a day, seven days a week. He understands that health care coverage can play an important role in a patient's outcome, which is why he offers his services to both insured and uninsured patients.

Dr. Elder graduated from the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine. He completed his residency at Wayne State University, and two fellowships in cardiology and interventional cardiology at Detroit Medical Center/Wayne State University.

A recognized expert in the field of cardiology, Dr. Elder has developed many clinical trials. He also has performed research on endovascular procedures and complex vascular cases. He serves as a clinical professor of Internal Medicine at the Wayne State University School of Medicine and at the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine. Dr. Elder founded the first comprehensive pulmonary embolism response team in 2012. He serves on the board of directors of the National PERT Consortium. He is well published in the field of pulmonary embolism treatment.

Dr. Elder is a highly requested speaker at international and national medical conferences and has earned several recognitions. He is the only doctor to have been twice named as a Crain's Healthcare Hero. After being selected in 2012 for saving limbs and preventing amputations through catheter-assisted cardiovascular surgery, he was again chosen in 2017 for his pioneering work in saving PE patients. He has been selected as a Top Doctor by Hour Magazine, received a People's Choice Award for compassionate doctor recognition and named the Wayne State University School of Medicine's Teacher of the Year and Mentor of the Year.

In 2017, Dr. Elder established an endowed student scholarship at the Wayne State University School of Medicine and he currently serves on the Admissions Committee and the Medical Alumni Board of Governors.
