Dr. Michael Guertin is a Professor of Anesthesiology and Chief Perioperative Medical Director at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center (OSUWMC). He began his career as an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at the Ohio State University Medical Center in 1992, earned the Teacher-of-the-Year Award in his department three years later, and has dedicated more than thirty years to educating future generations of physicians. From 1998 to 2013 he was a founding member and partner at Premier Anesthesiologists and the Ohio Surgery Center (OSC), the first physician-owned ambulatory surgery center in Columbus, Ohio. He served as the Medical Director and a member of the Board of Directors at the OSC from 2006 to 2013. Dr. Guertin returned to Ohio State in 2013 as the Medical Director of Ambulatory Surgical Services. He has been the Director of Leadership, and heads the Faculty Leadership Institute, in the Center for Faculty Advancement, Mentoring and Engagement (FAME) of the OSU College of Medicine since 2019. In 2021, he was selected to be the OSU Health System's first ever Chief Perioperative Medical Director.
Dr. Guertin was inspired by his mother, a nurse anesthetist, to enter the medical field after recovering from a hockey injury in high school. He graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry in 1987 from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, and followed that by receiving a Medical Doctor degree in 1988. He then completed an internship and residency training program in anesthesiology at OSUWMC, becoming Chief Resident in 1991. In 2015, Dr. Guertin completed a Master of Business Administration degree at The Ohio State University Fisher College of Business where he was selected to the Beta Gamma Sigma International Business Honor Society and was a Fisher College of Business Weidler Scholar. He is currently pursuing certification training as an executive coach.
Dr. Guertin does speaking engagements discussing ambulatory anesthesiology and physician leadership development, among other medical topics. Dr. Guertin is also the founder of a nonprofit organization called A Day Away. The organization was established to identify families who could benefit from a day to create a memorable experience with a family member who is battling a serious disease; to give them A Day Away to create wonderful memories.
In his spare time, Dr. Guertin's hobbies include golfing, biking, and working out. He also enjoys spending time with his family, especially his two granddaughters.
