Renee Jenkins

Renee Jenkins, M.D. ’71, is pediatrician, and professor and chair emerita of the Howard University College of Medicine.

After graduating from the Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1971, Dr. Jenkins completed a residency at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Jacobi Hospital, in New York City. She then completed a fellowship in Adolescent Medicine at Montefiore Hospital before launching an Adolescent Medicine program at Howard University.

In 1994, Dr. Jenkins was appointed chair of the Department of Pediatrics, and served in that capacity until March 2007. She retired from Howard University in August 2018 as the principal investigator for the D.C.-Baltimore Research Center on Child Health Disparities, in collaboration with Children’s National Medical Center and Johns Hopkins University Pediatrics Department, Primary Care Division.

“Wayne taught me the value of being part of a team and how to support fellow students while being supported yourself,” she said.

Dr. Jenkins was inducted as president of the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2007, and of the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine in 1989. In 2001, she was a featured physician in the “Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians” Exhibit at the National Library of Medicine.

She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, and served on the Board on Children, Youth and Families of the National Academy of Sciences.
