Joseph Aisner
Joseph Aisner, M.D. ’70, is a medical oncologist at the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey in New Brunswick. He has been in oncology practice for more than 40 years.
Dr. Aisner received a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Wayne State University. Oncology was already a strong interest, and the focus of his research when he entered the School of Medicine. Following his residency at Georgetown University Hospital, Dr. Aisner trained as a fellow at the National Cancer Institute. He was associate drector for Clinical Science, professor of Medicine and chief medical officer for the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He first joined CINJ as chief medical officer and associate director for Clinical Science before becoming co-director of the Thoracic Oncology Program.
Dr. Aisner is an editorial board member and Lung Cancer Section editor for HemOnc Today, which produces live editorial and video coverage from the most important clinical meetings in hematology and oncology. He has written or co-written more than 600 publications. He is a fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American Society of Clinical Oncology. He belongs to and has held office in multiple professional societies, served on the Executive Committee of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group and chaired several Data Safety Monitoring committees.
He has clinical expertise in lung cancer, thoracic tumors, endocrine cancers, thyroid cancer, rare tumors, cancer supportive care, new drug development and applications, and clinical trials.
Dr. Aisner has been named a “Top Doctor” by New Jersey Magazine (2001 to 2012), NJ Savvy Living Magazine (2011 to 2012), New York Magazine (2001 to 2012) and U.S. News and World Report. Other honors include the Sir William Osler Award, American Lung Association – New Jersey (2008); Senior American Society of Clinical Oncology Statesman (2009) and the Dean’s Faculty Mentoring Award (2010). He received the WSU School of Medicine Distinguished Alumni Award in 1990.
