Sean Blackwell
Sean Blackwell, M.D., (Res. ’94) , is chair and associate professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Medical School. Dr. Blackwell earned his medical degree from University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1993, and moved to Wayne State University, where he completed a transitional internship (1993 to 1994), residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology (1994 to 1998) and Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship (1998 to 2001).
He served on the faculty of the Wayne State University School of Medicine as assistant professor in the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine, executive chief resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology, medical director of Informatics and director of Antenatal Testing. While at the WSU School of Medicine, he was awarded the Arthur G. Seski, M.D./Chairman’s Award for Overall Excellence in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He and his brother, Ryan, developed a computer program, “Women, Infant and Neonatal Database,” or WIND, to track expectant women with problem pregnancies.
At UTH, Dr. Blackwell has been the principal investigator for Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Development Maternal Fetal Medicine Units Network, the largest clinical trials network in the United States. He directs the Larry C. Gilstrap, M.D., Center for Perinatal and Women’s Health Research, and serves as assistant dean for Healthcare Quality in Perinatal Medicine and Women’s Health. He is a graduate of the Physician Quality and Safety Academy at Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center and Medical School. He also is vice chair for the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine Publications Committee and serves on the SMFM Board of Directors.
His research interests include clinical trials in obstetrics, fetal heart rate monitoring and fetal brain injury, shoulder dystocia, adverse pregnancy outcomes and preterm birth. He has a strong clinical background in maternal-fetal medicine.
Dr. Blackwell has published extensive peer-reviewed journal articles, chapters and abstracts, winning the Grand Prize Award for his paper, “Prolonged In Utero Meconium Exposure Impairs Spatial Learning in the Adult Rat” at the 71st annual meeting of the Central Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He received the WSU School of Medicine Lawrence M. Weiner Award in 2004. The award honors the outstanding contributions made by individuals who are not alumni of the WSU School of Medicine and is based on exceptional performance in teaching, research and/or administrative duties.
He was an associate editor of BMC Pregnancy & Childbirth and BMC Research Notes, a guest editor of Obstetrics and Gynecology Clinics of North America and Obstetrics and Gynecology International, and served on the editorial boards of Obstetrics and Gynecology International and the Journal of Pregnancy, Gynecology & Obstetrics.
