Mitchell Dombrowski

Mitchell Dombrowski, M.D. ’79, is chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit. He is board certified in Obstetrics, Gynecology and Maternal Fetal Medicine.

After earning his medical degree, Dr. Dombrowski remained at the Wayne State University School of Medicine to complete his residency and fellowship. He then served as interim chair and specialist-in-chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at WSU and the Detroit Medical Center. He presided over the establishment of the first five endowed chairs in the history of the department. He is now a professor with tenure. In 2005 he was named the St. John Hospital’s Arthur and Carolyn Ulmer Endowed Chair of Women’s Health.

Dr. Dombrowski holds 11 U.S. patents, including the insulin pen, contemporary glucose test strips using capillary action, safety needles, and self-capping intravenous catheters, for which he was named one of the “Top 10 Physician-Inventors” in the MDNG Oncology Net Guide in 2007.

He has served as the principal investigator on multiple National Institutes of Health grants, including two NIH Center Grants. In 2003, he co-wrote an article reporting that progesterone significantly reduces recurrent preterm birth. In 2012, that was one of only four articles featured in the New England Journal of Medicine’s 200-year Maternal-Fetal Health Timeline.

Among the honors Dr. Dombrowski has earned are the School of Medicine’s Distinguished Alumni Award, the Distinguished Service Award and Instructor of the Year from WSU’s
Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1999. He has been named a “Top Doc” by both Hour Detroit magazine and The Best Doctors in America.

Dr. Dombrowski has a special interest in high-risk pregnancy. He is an editor of “Practical Strategies in Obstetrics and Gynecology” (Saunders Inc., 2000), “Contemporary Therapy in Obstetrics and Gynecology” (Saunders Inc., 2002) co-author of the 2004 “National Guidelines for Asthma Management During Pregnancy” and the author of more than 200 published peer-reviewed medical articles, chapters and abstracts.
