Robert Friedlander

Robert Friedlander., M.D. ’58, was president and dean of New York’s Albany Medical Center.

Dr. Friedlander interned at Mount Zion Hospital and Medical Center in San Francisco, and was a junior assistant resident in Obstetrics and Gynecology at University of Chicago Clinics at Chicago Lying-In Hospital. He also was a medical officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

In 1962, Dr. Friedlander began his association with Albany Medical Center, completing a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology, becoming the hospital’s attending obstetrician-gynecologist and a professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

In 1973, he moved to the administrative side, as assistant to the dean, then assistant dean, associate dean and executive associate dean.

He became acting president and dean of Albany Medical College in 1979, an interim post that became permanent in 1980, and continued in that role until 1987.

Dr. Friedlander’s honors began in his final year as a medical student at WSU when he received the Alexander McKenzie Campbell Prize for Excellence in Scholarship. In 1980, he received the Wayne State University School of Medicine’s Distinguished Alumni Award, and in 2011 he was named a Champion through the donations of Albany Medical Center’s patients and their families.
