Mark Juzych

Mark Juzych, M.D. ’89, M.H.S.A., chairs the Department of Ophthalmology at the Wayne State University School of Medicine and is director of the Kresge Eye Institute.

After graduating with his medical degree from the WSU School of Medicine, Dr. Juzych interned at St. John Hospital (1990) and completed a residency at the Kresge Eye Institute (1993) before serving a glaucoma fellowship at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins University (1995), where he also studied at its School of Public Health.

He joined the WSU School of Medicine in 1995. He also is a physician with the Detroit Medical Center, and has served in administrative positions for both institutions, including as their joint designated institutional officer.

Dr. Juzych completed the Executive Management Program of the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania and the Association of University Professors of Ophthalmology Management Program at the Anderson School of Business at the University of California, Los Angeles.

He has served as assistant dean and associate dean of Graduate Medical Education, the Wayne State University Physician Group’s associate chief medical officer of Revenue Cycle, a member of the Institutional Review Board, Admissions Committee, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education, the Dean’s Executive Council of Deans, the Dean’s Council for Continuing Medical Education, the Southeast Michigan Center for Medical Education Board of Directors, the Strategic Planning Committee and the Wayne State University Governmental Affairs Committee.

For the Detroit Medical Center, he has served as vice president of Academic Affairs, a member of the Ophthalmology Executive Council, the Department of Ophthalmology Credentials Committee, the Department of Ophthalmology Advisory Committee, the Medical Staff Operations Committee at Sinai-Grace Hospital and the DMC Executive Management Team. He also has been chief of Ophthalmology at Sinai-Grace Hospital, director of the Comprehensive Care Clinic and the Clinical Research Unit, and vice president of the Northwest Eye Foundation and the Fund for Ophthalmic Research and Education.

Dr. Juzych’s honors include the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education’s Palmer Courage to Teach Award in 2005 and the Palmer Courage to Lead Award in 2010, WSU’s Board of Governors Recognition and the Award for Leadership and Teaching in Continuing Medical Education, the WSU College Teaching Excellence Award, the WSU School of Medicine Recent Alumni Award, the Kresge Eye Institute residents’ Teacher of the Year Award, the Osler Institute’s Medical Specialty Board Review Course Teaching Award, the American Academy of Ophthalmology Senior Achievement Award and the Straatma Award for Excellence in Resident Education.
