Carl Lauter

Carl Lauter, M.D. ’65, is Allergy Section head and a specialist in Infectious Diseases at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich., and is board certified Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, and Allergy and Immunology.

After receiving his medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine, Dr. Lauter completed an internship at Henry Ford Hospital and a second year of Internal Medicine residency at Detroit General Hospital and the Wayne State University-affiliated hospitals. He then served in the U.S. Air Force as a captain in the Medical Corps at Chanute Air Force Base Hospital in Illinois (1967 to 1969). He completed his Internal Medicine residency at The Hospital of the Universities of Pennsylvania (1970).

Dr. Lauter returned to the WSU School of Medicine as a U.S. Public Health Service National Institutes of Health fellow in Infectious Diseases (1970 to 1973), and then joined the school’s full-time faculty as an assistant professor of Medicine.

He became the first chief of Infectious Diseases at Grace Hospitals and co-program director of the Grace Hospital Internal Medicine Residency Program (1973 to 1977). He then worked primarily at Harper Hospital from 1977 to 1979, first as assistant program director of the Wayne State University Internal Medicine Residency, then as chief of Infectious Diseases at Harper-Grace Hospitals. He also wrote Harper Hospital’s initial infection control guidelines for its bone marrow transplant program.

During this time, Dr. Lauter worked closely with WSU’s Hematology-Oncology Division and sub-specialized in the management of infections in patients with cancer and leukemia. He was promoted to associate professor of Medicine with tenure (1978) and clinical professor of Medicine (1996).

In 1980, Dr. Lauter completed an Allergy-Immunology fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital, subsequently joining the staff of William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak as vice chief of the Department of Medical Services and associate program director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program (1980 to 1982). He was then appointed chief of the Department of Medical Services and program director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program (982 to 1992). He was director of the Infectious Diseases Division (1982 to 1986). Dr. Lauter has been the full-time section head of Allergy & Clinical Immunology in the Department of Medicine since 1992.

His honors include being named a charter member of the WSU Academy of Scholars, the Staff Award from WSU students on two occasions and Teacher of the Year at Harper Hospital and William Beaumont Hospital. He received the 15-year American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology Volunteer Faculty Award for teaching at Henry Ford Hospital. He was chosen Laureate of the Michigan Chapter of the American College of Physicians, and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Michigan Chapter of the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. He received the Distinguished Medical Alumni Award from the WSU School of Medicine in 2007. He also received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Michigan Chapter of the American College of Physicians in 2014. He is regularly recognized on the Top Docs of America list in both Infectious Diseases and Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
