Anna Ledgerwood

Anna Ledgerwood, M.D., (Res. ’72) , F.A.C.S., is a professor of Surgery for the Wayne State University School of Medicine and trauma director at Detroit Receiving Hospital. She is certified by the American Board of Surgery.

After graduating with a bachelor’s degree from Gonzaga University, a degree from Sacred Heart Hospital School of Medicine Technology and her medical degree from Marquette University School of Medicine (now the Medical College of Wisconsin), Dr. Ledgerwood completed an internship at Detroit General Hospital (1968) and a general surgery residency at Wayne State University (1972). She then joined the WSU faculty.

Dr. Ledgerwood is a frequent guest lecturer at other medical schools, and helps the American College of Surgeons verify hospital trauma centers. Her clinical interests include gastrointestinal, oncologic, bariatric, trauma and emergency surgery, and critical care, with research interests in shock, resuscitation, injury, sepsis and education.

Among her honors, in 2014 Dr. Ledgerwood was named the first female president of the American Surgical Association. She also has served as the association’s vice president. She also has been vice president of the American College of Surgeons, and president of the Detroit and Michigan surgical associations, the Midwest Surgical Association, the Michigan chapter of the American College of Surgeons and the American Association for the Surgery of Trauma. In 2003, she received the WSU School of Medicine Lawrence Weiner Award, which honors the outstanding contributions made by individuals who did not receive their medical degree from WSU, but who provide exceptional performance in teaching, research and/or administrative duties.
