Edward McGuire
Edward McGuire, M.D. ’65, is professor emeritus of Urology for the University of Michigan Health System.
After receiving his medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine, Dr. McGuire completed his internship at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, New York, and residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital. At the Yale-New Haven Medical Center he completed a surgery residency, urology residency, urology postdoctoral fellowship, and served as chief resident urology.
He served on the faculty of Yale University (1971 to 1983), the University of Michigan (1983 to 1992) and the University of Texas Health Science Center (1992 to 1999). He returned to the University of Michigan faculty as a professor of Urology and head of the Neurourology and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery Division in 1999, and was named Reed Nesbit Professor of Urology in 2007.
An internationally recognized scholar, Dr. McGuire’s research focused on the principle of leak point pressure, understanding and surgical corrections of lower urinary tract dysfunction, neural conditions that impact bladder and urethral function, and the evaluation and treatment of incontinence. His pioneering work led to the development of numerous innovative therapies that are now regarded as the standard of care.
Dr. McGuire published more than 250 peer-reviewed articles, eight books and 88 book chapters. He was a frequent invited lecturer and was actively involved in numerous leading urology associations and societies. He received numerous awards, including the Urodynamics Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the American Foundation for Urologic Disease’s F. Brantley Scott, M.D., Award, the American Urologic Association’s Hugh Hampton Young Award and the WSU School of Medicine’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1989.
