Robert Neumar
Robert Neumar, M.D., Ph.D. ’96, is an expert in head trauma and brain damage after cardiac arrest, and professor and chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Michigan. He is board certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine and a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.
Before earning a doctorate in physiology from Wayne State University, Dr. Neumar received a bachelor’s from Juniata College in Huntingdon, Pa. in 1985, and a medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1990, where he completed an internship and residency in Emergency Medicine in 1993. He also completed a Sarnoff Fellowship at Ohio State University, a Critical Care Research Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Resuscitation Research Center and an Emergency Medicine Research Fellowship at Wayne State University.
Before joining UM in 2012, Dr. Neumar was an associate professor of Emergency Medicine and associate director of the Center for Resuscitation Science at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. He maintained an active clinical practice at the university hospital and conducted research on the mechanisms of brain injury. He developed therapies to minimize brain damage and improve the brain’s ability to recover after cardiac arrest and traumatic brain injury.
Dr. Neumar has written more than 75 original research manuscripts, reviews and textbook chapters. He has served as a reviewer for medical and biomedical science journals, including National Institutes of Health, Department of Defense and American Hospital Association study sections. He has been an invited lecturer at national and international symposia.
He has served as chair of the American Heart Association Emergency Cardiovascular Care Committee and as an AHA delegate to the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation.
Among his honors, Dr. Neumar has received the WSU School of Medicine Alumni Association’s Lawrence M. Weiner Award, the Peter Sarfar Award for Excellence in Graduate Research from the University of Pittsburgh and the Award for Outstanding Contribution in Research Award from the American College of Emergency Physicians.
