Mario Petrini

Mario Petrini, M.D. ’52, is a nationally recognized authority on human sexuality and a board-certified obstetrician and gynecologist in Fort Myers, Fla.

After earning his medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine, Dr. Petrini completed an internship at Wayne County General Hospital and residencies in pathology at Hutzel Hospital, Detroit, and in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center in New York. He also has a bachelor’s degree in English literature from WSU and was awarded a doctoral degree in Special Studies by the University of California, San Francisco. He pursued post-graduate study of human sexuality, including at the Kinsey Institute, Bloomington, Ind., and at the Institute for Human Biology and Reproduction, St. Louis, Mo.

Dr. Petrini was a clinical associate professor in Obstetrics and Gynecology at for WSU and was a frequent lecturer. He also was a professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology for the University of Minnesota Medical School, and has practiced in Florida.

He served on the President’s Committee for Medical Education and Medicare, Michigan’s Maternal Welfare Committee, and as president and treasurer of the WSU Medical Alumni Association.

In 1976 he received the School of Medicine Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award, presented annually to one or more alumni who have made outstanding contributions to humanitarian causes, whose contributions to the health field in the broader sense are outstanding or for service to the Wayne State University School of Medicine.
