Ernest Ring
Ernest Ring, M.D. ’69, a leading expert in the field of interventional radiology, is a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Radiology and Biomedical Imaging at the University of California, San Francisco.
After receiving his medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine, Dr. Ring completed a rotating internship at Detroit Receiving Hospital (1970) and a diagnostic radiology residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston (1974). He also completed a fellowship in cardiovascular radiology at Massachusetts General, and was named chief resident of the Radiology Department.
Dr. Ring worked jointly as chief of Radiology Service at the U.S. Naval Hospital at Roosevelt Roads Naval Station, Ceiba, Puerto Rico, and as a clinical instructor in Radiology at the University of Puerto Rico in San Juan, Puerto Rico (1974 to 1976). He also was an associate professor of Radiology and chief of Vascular Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania.
He then joined the University of California, San Francisco, where he served in a variety of positions, including chief of Interventional Radiology, chief of Radiology Service at UCSF Mount Zion Medical Center, and chief medical officer and associate dean at Mount Zion. He also served as chief of San Francisco General Hospital Radiology Service and SFGH vice chair, chief medical officer of the UCSF Medical Center and associate dean for the UCSF School of Medicine.
Although Dr. Ring retired in 2008, he was recalled to work in the Interventional Radiology Section at SFGH and UCSF Parnassus, and returned to the position of chief of Radiology at UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion and the Ambulatory Care Clinic in 2012.
Among his honors, Dr. Ring received the WSU School of Medicine Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1982. The award is presented annually to one or more alumni who have made outstanding contributions to humanitarian causes, whose contributions to the health field in the broader sense are outstanding or for service to the Wayne State University School of Medicine. He also received the International Symposium on Endovascular Therapies’ Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012.
Dr. Ring has served professional publications such as Radiology, the Journal of Vascular and Interventional Radiology, and the American Journal of Roentgenology. He has published more than 200 articles, 30 book chapters and the book “Interventional Radiology: Principles and Techniques.”
Dr. Ring is past president of the Society of Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiology and a recipient of both its Gold Medal and Distinguished Innovator awards. He is a member of the American Society of Cardiovascular Radiology and the San Francisco Radiological Society, a fellow of the American College of Radiology and former member of the ACR Board of Chancellors.
