Stephen Sallan
Stephen Sallan, M.D. ’67, is professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and a pediatric oncologist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Boston Children’s Hospital.
After receiving his medical degree from the Wayne State University School of Medicine, Dr. Sallan completed residencies in Pediatrics at Boston Floating Hospital, Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and the Hospital for Sick Children in London, England. In 1972, he served as a fellow in Pediatric Oncology at Boston Children’s Hospital and Dana-Farber, where he joined the staff in 1975. He was named chief of staff and chair of the Medial Staff Executive Committee in 1995 and chief of staff emeritus in 2012.
He is recognized as one of the foremost experts on childhood leukemia. His research formed the basis for clinical programs worldwide and led to the bone marrow transplantation program pioneered at Dana-Farber. He also developed treatments for malignant kidney tumors and ways to reduce illness associated with some cancer treatments.
Among his honors, Dr. Sallan most recently received the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s 2015 Pediatric Oncology Award and Lecture “for his extraordinary efforts combining research and patient care.” He also received the WSU School of Medicine Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1997 and the James Carreras Prize for International Pediatrician of the Year in 1998. He was named to Castle Connolly America’s Top Doctors® in 2006, and Castle Connolly America’s Top Doctors® for Cancer in 2009.
