Maryjean Schenk
Maryjean Schenk, M.D. ’83, M.P.H., M.S., is Associate Chief of Staff/Education and Designated Educational Officer for the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit. She retired from the position of vice dean of Medical Education for the Wayne State University School of Medicine in July 2015. She has a research interest in cancer epidemiology, medical education and Family Medicine.
Dr. Schenk completed an internship in the WSU Department of Family Practice (1984), a Family Practice residency at St. Mary’s in Grand Rapids, Mich. (1986), fellowships in academic family medicine at the State University of New York at Buffalo (1991) and medical education research from the Association of American Medical Colleges (1998) and an Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine Program for Women at MCP Hahnemann University in Philadelphia (2001). She also earned a bachelor’s in chemistry from Grand Valley State University (1977), masters’ degrees from the University of Michigan, first in health planning and administration from the School of Public Health (1985), and in industrial health from the Rackham School of Graduate Studies, (1993).
Dr. Schenk joined the WSU Family Medicine Department as an assistant professor in 1991, which became a joint appointment with the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in 1997. She became an associate professor in 1999, and then a full professor in 2009.
Dr. Schenk has been chair of the WSU Physician Group/University Family Physicians (1998 to 2006), of the WSU Department of Family Medicine (2001 to 2006), and the Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences Department (2006 to 2010). She also served as interim associate dean of Academic and Student Programs (2005 to 2006), and vice dean of Medical Education (2010 to 2015).
She has served as treasurer and president of the Association of Occupational and Environmental Medicine Clinics and the Association of Departments of Family Medicine, and as an elected member-at-large of the National Board of the American Cancer Society.
Dr. Schenk received Grand Valley State University’s Distinguished Alumnus award in 2012 and the WSU School of Medicine Alumni Association’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2013. Her other honors include a WSU College Teaching Award in 1997, 2001 and 2005; the WSU President’s Exceptional Service Award in 2001, and the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award in 2006.
Dr. Schenk has been a lead investigator on more than 15 grants in cancer epidemiology, medical education and family medicine research infrastructure development. She has published more than 40 peer-reviewed articles.
