Robert Wilson
Robert Wilson, M.D., (Res. ’63), F.A.C.S., M.C.C.M., is a professor of Surgery for Wayne State University, a general and thoracic surgeon, and a surgical intensivist at Detroit Receiving Hospital. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery, Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, and Surgical Critical Care Medicine.
Dr. Wilson received his bachelor’s degree (Phi Beta Kappa) from Lehigh University in 1955. He received his medical degree (Alpha Omega Alpha) from Temple University in 1958 and completed his residency at WSU, first in general surgery (1963) and then in thoracic surgery (1965).
He became an instructor of Surgery in 1963. He has been a full professor of Surgery for 44 years. He became chief of Surgery at Detroit Receiving Hospital in 1980, and director of Trauma services in 1988. He has also been the director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit since 1980 at Detroit Receiving Hospital.
In 1971, Dr. Wilson was named a Markle Scholar. In 1988, he received WSU’s Charles H. Gershenson Distinguished Faculty Fellowship. In 1994, he received the WSU School of Medicine’s Lawrence M. Weiner Award, which recognizes the unique and vital contributions made to the School of Medicine’s growth and reputation by a non-alumnus. In 2013, he was given the WSU School of Medicine’s Trailblazer Award for his pioneering work in trauma and critical care.
Dr. Wilson was a founder and past-president of the Society of Critical Care Medicine. He has published extensively, including 251 articles in refereed journals, 12 books and 223 book chapters. Dr. Wilson retired in August 2015, but continues to be active in education activities of the WSU Department of Surgery.
