James Fox
James Fox, M.D. ’85, has had a distinguished career in Emergency Medicine serving the people of Detroit and teaching physicians for the future. He developed the two-tiered reimbursement system for Michigan Medicaid Emergency Medicine Services.
The clinical associate professor at the Wayne State University School of Medicine has practiced Emergency Medicine for more than 31 years.
"The WSU School of Medicine is a great place to learn clinical medicine with a true hands-on approach. We preached and lived the motto ‘See one, do one, teach one," Dr. Fox said.
He completed his Emergency Medicine Residency at Detroit Receiving Hospital, and was an Emergency Medicine staff physician at Harper-Grace Hospitals in Detroit, St. Francis Hospital in Illinois and William Beaumont Hospital in Troy, Mich., before joining the staff of St. John Hospital and Medical Center in 1989, where he served as vice chief of Emergency Medicine from 1990 to 2008. He continues to practice as a staff physician there. He has held numerous positions with the Michigan College of Emergency Physicians, the Michigan State Medical Society and the American College of Physicians. He received his master of business administration degree from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville in 2010.
In addition to his career, Dr. Fox also strives to give back to his community. He is a longtime volunteer with the St. John Guild, a volunteer organization that supports the development and expansion of health care services to the community offered by St. John Hospital. He received the guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2010. He also is an active volunteer at St. Paul on the Lake Catholic Church and School. His hobbies include boating, alpine skiing and golfing with family and friends.
Dr. Fox grew up in Detroit, Grosse Pointe and Rochester, Mich., and has been married to Jackie, a nurse anesthetist, for 32 years. "We have three wonderful, talented children of whom we are very proud," he said.
