Notes of Appreciation
Every contribution alumni make, whether providing a meal or housing for a medical student, offering career advice or a shadowing opportunity, hosting an event, or donating to the Medical Alumni Annual Fund, has a lasting impact on the School of Medicine community. Below are expressions of appreciation from medical students for support they have received from alumni.
Event: Shadowing
Event Year: 2018
Alexander Voitkov
On November 12, 2018 I had the pleasure of shadowing Dr. Engelman at Harper University Hospital. That day I was able to watch two very different procedures. The first one was a gastric bypass, and the second one was a biopsy of the temporal artery to diagnose temporal arteritis. It was exciting to learn how broad the field of general surgery can be. One moment we were in the peritoneum removing part of the stomach and working in a huge field; and the next moment we were crowded around a small vessel. I am glad to say that my experience was a pleasant one. The entire team was very nice to me and ensured that it was a valuable learning experience. This shadowing experience was more than just observing the team perform. They ensured that I was able to see and follow what was going on, and they asked me questions on the important anatomy of each procedure. I learned a lot from the entire team and especially Dr. Engelman. I remember the experience as if it were yesterday and I am thankful that Dr. Engelman is a very cool, down to earth physician who was eager to teach me. I am also very thankful for the alumni office for providing me with this opportunity.
